that his situation in the Surveyor General's office had been abolished, and that I could not therefore recognize any further his part. I also said that he was perfectly well aware that there was little chance of any vacancy by which he could be employed, while it was probable that some individuals of the staff who were as close as himself at present in employ would of necessity be dismissed, in consequence of the proposed reduction of the establishment generally. Mr. Tarrant then proposed to read to me a Draft of a Petition that he had prepared to the address of your Lordship, which I declined attending to, but stated my readiness to forward any Memorial that he might be desirous of sending to your Lordship. This morning the enclosed Memorial A reached me, and I therefore have the honor to transmit it.

29 Mr. Tarrant having been officially informed that his services would be dispensed with from the 30th September 1867, on the grounds that they were no longer required, cannot, I presume, be entitled to any further consideration than what Your Lordship has been pleased to extend to him; and that he is not a desirable person to be employed in the Public Service will be evident from my Predecessor's Despatch No. 1999 of the 16th September, 1847.
